Death Awaits – T.S. Paul

This series has run out of steam. I assume anybody reading a review of book ten of a series has read earlier books in the series, so the question is how book ten stacks up to earlier books. My answer, unfortunately, is that I didn’t enjoy it. It was short (the digital equivalent of 120 pages), but didn’t actually have enough story to fill it up. It’s about 30% exposition - catching the reader up on the bad things that have happened in the half-year since the last book - 5% unicorn schtick, and 65% side story.

Agatha’s father’s side of the family has kidnapped her to serve an arcane purpose. She has to learn or manifest or display enough skills to deal with that purpose and live to tell the tale. It seems unlikely that the side story will have any effect on the main plot. So the story stands on its own. Was it fun to read?

The author didn’t seem to be enjoying the story he was telling, which made it hard for me to enjoy the story I was reading. I don’t know whether I’ll give book eleven a chance if it comes out.
