Magic and the Shinigami Detective – Honor Raconteur

Jamie Edwards is an FBI agent who has been kidnapped to another world. At the start of the main story, she is a police detective in what might as well be London circa 1900 AD. With magic. (The kidnapping is peripheral to the story; she escapes in the first chapter.)

The Henri Davenforth of the title is a Magical Examiner - a provider of forensic magical support in the police department. After a robbery with an odd magical twist, he is paired with Edwards to work on the case.

The story itself is an okay police procedural (with a dash of magic). The protagonists talk to people and run down clues until figure out who, how, where. The interaction of Henri - staid, intellectual, a believer in food and not a believer in exercise - and Jamie is the main source of the novel’s charm.
